The Yoruba Talking Drum – A Cultural Highlight by Yinka Oloòtọ́

The Yoruba Talking Drum – A Cultural Highlight by Yinka Oloòtọ́

At many parties and weddings, you'll often see these unique wooden stringed drums with an authentic and punchy sound. While many are familiar with them, few understand their significance or relevance today. Known as the 'Talking Drum' in Yoruba land, this instrument is believed to have originated centuries ago. It has been used to convey messages across distances, celebrate important events, and accompany oral storytelling .

The drum is said to "talk" because its pitch can be regulated to mimic the tone and cadence of human speech. This ability has ensured its reverence over the years, with many Yoruba commentators noting that the talking drum transcends music. It serves as a bridge between generations, embodying the voices of ancestors and echoing the sounds of the past into the present .
