On Thursday 29th October 2026, the award-winning Mirror Mirror programme orchestrated by MENT4 proudly showcased their latest crop of fresh musical talent for the world to see at the Croydon Boxpark stage for their third year. Much more than just a series of performances, this was truly an unforgettable night that championed and celebrated the next generation of creative talent emerging from our Hip-Hop/Rap London scene. This event comes at an important time where there has been much polarising discourse surrounding the very zeitgeist of Black-British Hip-Hop/Rap… Many questions have been raised regarding the longevity/commercial viability of artists within the scene, whether originality of output across these genres is in decline and what is fundamentally needed to reenergise the pulse of this community. Such an effort by MENT4 is a nothing short of a proactive approach to provide answers to such issues which appear to prevent the scene from truly flourishing.

For context, MENT4 is a charity organisation of 16 years working in and around Croydon; in their words “MENT4 exists to create pathways of freedom and growth — supporting young people to overcome barriers, discover purpose, and live with confidence and hope”. Impressively, an amazing total of £5460 was raised on the night through fundraising and giveaway initiatives! All proceeds will go towards funding the fourth cohort of Mirror Mirror in 2027. With over 800 in attendance, @stillshadey/MENT4’s efforts continue to demonstrate an earnest commitment towards ensuring that a sturdy framework exists to nurture the new wave of talent, enabling them to fulfil their artistic ambitions without compromise or limitation.

Prior to Louis Rei gracing the stage just after 9pm, the overall event treated attendees to a jam-packed itinerary from 7pm, including opening performances from the 2026 Mirror Mirror cohort, giveaways, keynote speeches from the MENT4 team, an award ceremony to congratulate the 2026 cohort, and of course, plenty of unapologetic South London vibes and energy! All of these elements were seamlessly strung together by the infectiously vibrant @mc_kwaks who hosted the affair with a dual display of poise and potency through his command of the crowd and microphone - with plenty of jokes sprinkled throughout to keep us engaged and entertained!

Congratulations are to be given to @1teegz @unknguero @kayceeqzz @officially_.db @jinko.jdg for their fantastic performances! It was inspiring to also see them take control of the moment while going bar for bar in a lyrical exercise during a Cypher performance with Louis Rei - and nobody held back their rapid-fire-flows, prolific punchlines and charismatic confidence… They all rose to the occasion and held their own. As they say, the kids will be alright - from the pure promise and potential which they all displayed, the game is in good hands if they are the ones to inherit what the contemporary architects have built. To me, this moment signified Louis Rei metaphorically passing the baton to the next generation, by fanning their flames of passion and giving them a coveted co-sign that will surely hold them in good stead as they embark on their adventurous voyage towards glory.

To me, this also reflected a coming-of-age moment in which Louis stepped firmly into his position as an elder statesman in the Black-British London music scene. He exuded the aura of a benevolent big brother by actively reaching back to give his stamp of approval and support to the new recruits who are rising through the ranks. If I am honest, this is something rarely displayed in our London eco-system - especially given the overly competitive every-man-for-himself hostility which rap culture breeds. Such a selfless and bold move should be applauded and replicated by others in the scene (I believe) if we are to truly evolve our culture organically.

Then came the moment we were all waiting for: the headline performance by the microphone veteran and slick lyricist himself Louis Rei - well known for his wicked wordplay, striking storytelling and mesmerising melodic flows. These signature ingredients of his while meshed together with the lush sounds from the live band and his renewed sense of purpose, resulted in a heartfelt and a sensational presentation of his new project “Made New” (available to stream/purchase now!). My personal highlight was his soulful performance of “Meticulous” with Amani Lia - her warm, hypnotic, yet piercing vocals oozing over and around his barrage of raw hard hitting bars (speaking to both past and present versions of his being) such as “I can’t tell you about a rivalry cuz, but I can show you God’s just to a righteous path” set the scene for a gripping performance that was simultaneously cloaked in vulnerability and bravado.

Throughout the performance, I keenly observed his effortless mastery of crowd control techniques which made the occasion very interactive and thoroughly engaging. Particularly, his decision to strip everything back multiple times to simply speak directly to us against the backdrop of gospel-coded instrumentals and harmonies lulled by the singers. During these intimate moments where he entered into flow state, he lay down his armour and transparently shared personal parables of tragedy, triumph, salvation and devotion to Christ. I commend him not only for his strength to bare his soul so honestly on stage, but for his unwavering expressions of love for his family that he simply cannot contain.

These sentiments have been echoed throughout his more recent offerings, for instance during the onslaught of introspective rhetorical questions in his widely applauded GRM Daily Invite Only freestyle such as “who really at peace?; whose got a wife and kids that trusts how they lead?; whose here a man of integrity not deceit?” which force the listener to take a moment and reflect on what’s really important in their lives… This commitment to truth and reality as the foundation of his subject matter is what makes this next chapter of his career so exciting in my opinion… He truly is a man “Made New” that is now completely leaning in his purpose (with music being the vehicle to express the message). Deeper than rap, this is the unfiltered evolution of a man that we are watching play out in real time. His recent life changing epiphanies have resulted in this newfound clarity, confidence and character that bleed into his music and very manner with which he carries himself - and this unapologetic realness is makes his story so compelling to follow... Indeed, this ego death has enabled Louis Rei to transcend into the next phase of his artistry and servitude as a vessel of expression.

Notably, this occasion marked Louis Rei’s first performance as a solo artist, having departed from the legendary and MOBO award winning Hip-Hop/R&B group WSTRN with smash songs such as Txtin’, Sharna, and super classic In2. No love is lost between the trio, as the other members (Haile and Akelle) attended to support their brother!

Prior to Louis’ electric performance, Norman Busigu interviewed him to discuss:

  • His evolution as an artist and the importance of substance/integrity;

  • His thoughts on “UK Poo”/the UK Music scene at present/advice on how talent can crack through;

  • His aspirations of collaborating with Grammy award-winning artist Tems;

  • Words to his fans;

  • and more!
