Dangote Oil Refinery – A shift in Nigerian fortunes?

One of the major problems facing the Nigerian economy is its increasing reliance on imported oil, despite Nigeria being ranked 7th globally in oil production . Aliko Dangote, one of the world's richest men and a Nigerian , decided to address this issue by building his own refinery. Dangote's ambitious plan aims to secure energy independence for Nigeria. The Dangote Oil Refinery has even filed a lawsuit against several oil players in Nigeria, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), seeking to halt gasoline imports . The refinery claims it can meet the nation's gasoline demands. While the ambition and necessity are clear, challenges such as corruption, insecurity, and maintenance persist. Can Nigeria's richest businessman finally demonstrate the country's ability to solve its own problems?

Did Boko Haram ever really die?

When the name 'Boko Haram' is mentioned, we often recall the past – images of 'bring back our girls' alongside viral Twitter commentaries and pleas for better security amid the death and horror Boko Haram brought. However, in recent times, the name 'Boko Haram' seems to have faded from the headlines. Despite this, some states in northern Nigeria remain under Boko Haram control . A recent report by Beacon Security highlights that in the first quarter of this year alone, Boko Haram carried out over 397 attacks in Borno State, resulting in 514 deaths and 357 abductions . With Boko Haram still clearly active, the current president, Bola Tinubu, has much to deliver on his mandate of 'Renewed Hope’.

Two Years in – ‘Renewed Hope’ or more of the same?

in May 2023, Bola Tinubu was elected as the Nigerian president, running on the theme of 'renewed hope' and promising change for the Nigerian people. Halfway through his tenure, let's review his key actions:
1. Fuel Subsidy Removal: The removal of fuel subsidies has been a major talking point. Economists viewed it as necessary, but many affected saw it as a death sentence, with fuel prices soaring to 617 Naira per litre . However, this move has led to estimated savings of four trillion Naira annually. The decision itself wasn't unexpected, but the timing and manner of its announcement caused discontent , alongside claims of mishandled palliatives.
2. Port Harcourt Refinery: Under pressure from Dangote's refinery and the need to transition Nigeria from an energy-dependent to an energy-secure state, Tinubu managed to get the Port Harcourt refinery operational. This has created thousands of jobs and aims to reduce fuel import costs and provide energy security. However, the refinery missed seven deadlines to begin operation, raising concerns about crude oil supply consistency and infrastructure maintenance .
3. Crazy Inflation: Tinubu's tenure has seen alarming inflation, with food prices rising by over 600 percent, putting survival at risk . Nigerians have criticized his administration, describing it as the "worst thing" to happen to the country. The #30DaysRantChallenge on social media has seen Nigerians express their frustration with the rising cost of living, citing examples of skyrocketing prices under the APC administration. Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has encouraged participation in the challenge, urging Nigerians to "rant persistently and consistently until we WIN !"
