Welcome to the Visual Postcard Series, where we interview members of the diaspora to understand what “Home” means to them, learn about their stories, and explore how we as a community can move forward together!
In this episode, we interview Stacee Smith. We explore her career as a Lawyer (being a qualified Barrister in Bermuda and qualified Solicitor in England & Wales) Journalist (having written for the likes of the Guardian), and a Communications Consultant with wider ambitions of becoming a published Author. She is also a musician (pianist and a Jazz/Soul singer). Having grown up in Bermuda, she would go onto study and work in Canada and the UK for higher education, but never loses her pride and rooting in her Bermudan heritage.
Together they discuss how:
Her love for the beauty and culture of Bermuda
Her view on the significant Caribbean, British and American influences on Bermudan culture
Growing up in a musical family and the importance music holds in her life
Misconceptions around Bermuda (e.g. the Bermuda Triangle! - which isn’t real!)
Navigating new cultures during her overseas study and working (Spain, Canada, UK)
How her identity has influenced her career paths
The obstacles that come with being seen as a foreigner
The importance of remaining connected to her Bermudan root and how the diaspora can stay connected
Ways to improve DEI in the media landscape
