Welcome to the Visual Postcard Series, where we interview members of the diaspora to understand what “Home” means to them, learn about their stories, and explore how we as a community can move forward together!
In this episode, we interview Qali: a world builder who has lived across Africa and Europe and worked at the likes of the U.N., W.H.O., World Bank and in policy based roles in Somalia to bring change… now a Consultant and Executive Producer!
During her visit to London we caught up to discuss:
Being global citizen: being Somali by heritage, but living across Denmark, Malawi, Kenya, the UK and Somalia (and how creative writing and photography helped her make sense of the world)
How living in Africa in her formative years shaped her identity; her experiences of encountering racial inequalities in the global North
Discussing her work as a Senior Policy, Advocacy & Campaigns Coordinator, having drafted World Vision’s Somalia’s first policy on ending Violence Against Children + the realities of moving back to Somalia in 2018 and her views on some of the biggest issues facing Somalia’s development and solutions
Her shift to becoming an Executive Producer and Consultant, and the importance of Africans intentionally telling their own stories
The lack of representation of East Africans on global stages / platforms
How can we as diaspora can best remain connected to back home
