Nigeria Retains Unity Cup Crown with Commanding Victory Over Jamaica!

Nigeria Retains Unity Cup Crown with Commanding Victory Over Jamaica!

Special thanks to SoapBox London for granting Postcards From The Diaspora official Press/Media Accreditation at the 2026 Unity Cup.

London, UK - Tuesday 2nd June: Nigeria successfully defended its Unity Cup title with a dominant 3-0 victory over Jamaica in the 2026 Unity Cup Final at The Valley in London on Saturday evening.

The Super Eagles delivered an impressive performance from start to finish, showcasing attacking quality, defensive discipline, and tactical control to secure back-to-back Unity Cup championships.

Alhassan Yusuf netted a brace for Eric Chelle’s side, while Terem Moffi, the Porto striker, also nodded home from Femi Azeez’s cross sealing a convincing win over a Jamaican side that had entered the final seeking redemption after last year's dramatic defeat.

Super Eagles Head Coach Eric Chelle said: “ My message to Nigeria is I want to say once again sorry because we didn't qualify for the World Cup, now this is my feeling. Sorry we didn't win the AFCON. I tried to do my job, I want to say thank you for the support that the fans showed the team. If I have some time, I will give everything for this national team, but football is football and everyday I try to improve, like a man, like a coach, so I would like to say thank you to this country.”

The final marked the second consecutive Unity Cup championship meeting between Nigeria and Jamaica, continuing a growing rivalry that has become one of the tournament's marquee fixtures. Jamaica had reached the final after defeating India in the semifinal, while Nigeria booked its place with a victory over Zimbabwe.

Earlier in the day, Zimbabwe claimed third place with a determined 1-0 victory over India in the playoff match at The Valley. A first-half penalty proved decisive as the Warriors produced a disciplined performance to earn their first win of the tournament and finish their campaign on a high note.

India, participating in the Unity Cup for the first time, demonstrated resilience and commitment throughout the competition. Although the Blue Tigers finished fourth, their participation added a new dimension to the tournament and provided valuable international experience against strong opposition.

The third-place playoff provided an entertaining prelude to the final and underscored the tournament's commitment to offering meaningful competition for all participating teams while celebrating the unifying power of football across diverse communities.

Held at The Valley in Charlton, London, the 2026 Unity Cup brought together Nigeria, Jamaica, India, and Zimbabwe in a celebration of football, culture, and community with over 14,000 fans attending across the three days. The tournament continues to strengthen sporting and cultural ties among nations with vibrant diaspora communities in the United Kingdom.

Nigeria's triumph further reinforces its status as one of the competition's most successful teams, adding another Unity Cup title to its growing legacy. The Super Eagles leave London as deserving champions after an unbeaten campaign and a final performance that showcased the quality, depth, and ambition within the squad.
